Kindergarten at UCS

Kindergarten at UCS — A Great Place to Start
Two Union Colony Elementary School students work together at a table. On the table is a pile of brightly colored foam dice with letters on each side. A teacher leans over to observe the student’s work.

For both parents and children, starting Kindergarten awakens feelings of excitement and nerves, joy and anticipation. At Union Colony Schools (UCS), we honor Kindergarten as a special time for children to not only learn to read and write, but to also make friends and build a foundation for the rest of the school journey.

Tuition-Free Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Union Colony is a tuition-free, full day program from 8:10 to 3:10 p.m. All children who turn 5 years old by October 1, and regardless of neighborhood, are eligible to enroll in our free Kindergarten.

Our Kindergarten program maintains the warm and nurturing environment that is commonly expected from Kindergarten alongside an experience rich in fundamentals like phonics and number sense. Our highly skilled teachers engage students through activities like songs, games and stories. Social skills and physical and emotional growth are always an essential part of the Kindergarten experience at Union Colony.

Art, Music, & Physical Education

Kindergarten students at Union Colony Schools enjoy regular art, music, and physical education classes, as well as weekly visits to our beautiful new library. 1:1 technology is integrated into our day and students learn how to use a variety of tools for both practice and creativity.

The Union Colony Elementary School library is bright and organized. Wooden shelves are full of books and child sized furniture is inviting and comfortable.

Learning at Union Colony Schools is hands-on, exploratory, and FUN. Our outdoor learning classroom and new garden beds nurture curiosity and inquiry. Kids love to get their hands dirty and watch something grow from seed to sprout. Our spacious playground provides a joyful place to socialize and take risks in a safe environment. Learning doesn’t feel hard when you are having fun.

Small School Setting

One of the greatest assets of our free public charter school is our small school feel. Our youngest students are welcomed into our community with open arms. Union Colony Schools are safe and secure, providing a positive space to grow relationships between K-5 students, like our Science and Book Buddies programs.

Support from teacher assistants in the Kindergarten classroom ensures that we meet the individual social and academic needs of each child. Highly qualified teachers meet students where they are, providing tailored instruction that suits the individual. We also offer effective, tailored support for English Language Learners.

Union Colony Elementary School students are running and playing on the school playground. There is a large grassy area and multiple brightly colored play structures with swings and slides.

Home to School Connection

We know just how important the connection between home and school is to a student’s success. Each year, we hold an open house to welcome new families to the Union Colony Schools community. Frequent communication via apps, email and phone calls between home and school keeps everyone on the same page. Parents are welcome and encouraged to support our Kindergarten classes throughout the year in a variety of ways, from chaperoning to after-hours project preparation.

For busy parents, before and after-school care through our partner ABC is offered in our school cafeteria. Students may arrive as early as 6:15 a.m. and stay after dismissal until 6:15 p.m. for a safe and social place to spend the day.
