Principal Perspectives - Dave Warner

Dear Timberwolf Families,

Fall is in full swing, frost is in the air, leaves are falling, and that can mean only one thing…. The UCE Fall Carnival/Trunk-or-Treat is just around the corner.  Our second annual  Fall Carnival/Trunk-or-Treat event will take place on October 26th, 2023 from 5:00PM - 7:30PM.  Last year, we had a wonderful turn-out, I hope you will consider attending.

Thank you for attending Parent/Teacher Conferences.  If you were unable to attend, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher for an update.  During conferences, classroom teachers passed out a very important, easy to read, Parent Reading Level Letter.  There are no charts or graphs to sort through, only your child’s current grade-level and their current reading level.  You will receive an updated letter at mid-year, and at spring conferences.  You will easily be able to compare your child’s 3 letters and see what growth has taken place over the year.  We are committed to ensure each student is leaving Union Colony Elementary School on reading grade-level.  We need your help!  One of the most beneficial things you can do to help your child excel at reading is to have them read to you for 30 minutes daily at home.  If your child is an emerging reader, it is ok to share the reading load.  The 30 nightly minutes does not have to be completed in one setting, it can be broken up.  More than ever, reading at home is critical to growth and achievement in reading.

The weather is turning cooler as we approach fall.  Please send warm outer clothing for your child to wear while at recess.

I encourage each family to consider attending our Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:15PM.  This is a good opportunity for you to get involved in decisions that directly impact your child.

Thank you for your partnership at UCE!

As a charter school we have a degree of freedom in determining the educational process based on the needs of the students who attend UCES.  A key part of our founding was the belief that our trained teachers, who know their students, should be involved in a collaborative process that determines the culture, climate, and curriculum used at this school.  While basics remain the same, our student body brings unique challenges with their diverse language and cultural backgrounds.  Our faculty, working with administration, has worked hard to develop an educational approach focused on preparing our students to begin a journey of success in life. While we were founded to prepare students for success at our secondary campus across from Aim Community College, we believe that this preparation will serve the children of this community no matter where they continue their educational process.
