Designing Separate Middle and High School Experiences Under One Roof
One of the most common questions families ask when they learn that Union Colony Preparatory serves grades 6 through 12 in a single building is how does that work? It is a fair question. A 6th grader and a 12th grader are in very different places in life. What they need from a school day, how they move through a building, and the kind of structure that helps them thrive are not the same. At Union Colony Preparatory, a tuition-free K–12 public charter school in the Greeley area, the answer is intentional design.
Rather than letting all secondary students share the same spaces and hallways throughout the day, we have created separate areas for younger and older students. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders have their own space and rhythm. So do the high schoolers. The building is the same. The experience inside it is not.
The results are noticeable. Hallways are calmer. Transitions between classes are more orderly. Younger students are not navigating the building alongside 17-year-olds, and older students are not weaving through a crowd of 6th graders on their way to class.
Both groups benefit, but the middle schoolers may feel it most. Moving from elementary school to secondary school is a big shift. Having a space that meets them where they are, rather than throwing them into a full high school environment on day one, makes that transition easier.
The approach reflects something we have always believed: that structure and intentionality make learning possible. An 11-year-old and a 17-year-old do not operate under the same rules, and they should not have to. By blending the best of the elementary model with the expectations of a high school environment, and then gradually increasing the level of independence as students move through the grades, Union Colony Preparatory is building a secondary experience that grows with its students.
If you are looking for a secondary school that takes the middle school years seriously and prepares students for high school on their own terms, we would love to give you a tour so you can see our philosophy in action. Call us to set one up.
