Principal Perspectives - Dave Warner
Dear Timberwolf Families,
The 2023/2024 school year is well under way. Many exciting events and challenges are in place for the year including our school-wide reading focus theme; “Get Carried Away with Reading!”
Balloons are hanging from the ceiling around the building. Each student has a paper balloon that will move throughout the hallways as they reach 25 reading steps and then move again for each additional 25 reading steps they complete. Each month, a different continent will be explored by classroom teachers. The goal for each student is to read their way around the world while learning about each continent. During Aug/Sept., students will learn about North America/ Central America. During Oct, students will learn about South America. During Nov. students will learn about Africa. During Dec/Jan, students will learn about Europe. During Feb, students will learn about Antarctica. During Mar, students will learn about Asia and during April/May, students will learn about Australia/Oceania.
We have had our first guest author visit UCE. On August 25, award winning author Kentrell Martin shared with students many of the books he has written. We are working on having another guest author visit during the 2nd semester. One of the most beneficial things you can do to help your child excel at reading is to have them read to you for 30 minutes daily at home. If your child is an emerging reader, it is ok to share the reading load. The 30 minutes does not have to be completed in one setting, it can be broken up.
The weather is turning cooler as we approach fall. Please send warm outer clothing for your child to wear while at recess.
I encourage each family to consider attending our Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:15PM. This is a good opportunity for you to get involved in decisions that directly impact your child.
I hope your school year is off to a great start.
