Everything You Need to Know About UCS (Your Questions Answered)
Our tuition-free K-12 public charter in Greeley/Evans, CO, runs on connection, commitment, and a clear plan to get kids learning at full speed. Union Colony Schools (UCS) gladly answers all parent and caregiver questions.
What Sets UCS Apart From Other Greeley Schools?
Our students attend school on a unified campus. There’s one team and one amazing community tracking your child’s growth from their first circle time to their last AP exam.
Students stay known.
Class sizes are small, and the magic is found in what our teachers do with that close proximity. We learn student names fast and spot patterns even faster. If a second grader starts skipping reading assignments, someone notices and calls immediately. Gaps get addressed before they spread at UCS.
Curriculum leads, worksheets follow.
In our kindergarten classes, phonics shows up early and sticks. Students use tactile tools to form letters, speak sounds aloud, and ease into age-appropriate books before winter break. By spring, most are reading independently.
In upper grades, that same direct instruction style expands. Students don’t passively watch lessons—they argue points, revise essays, graph data sets, solve multi-step problems. When graduates leave UCS, they’ve written research papers, led class discussions, and defended ideas in front of peers. Some have also gotten college credits through our partnership with AIMS College.
K–12 means consistency.
Our beginning-to-end campus ensures kids don’t age out of a school that’s a “great fit.” There is no anxious middle school handoff. Parents stay in one system with one set of expectations from the finger-painting days of kindergarten to pep rallies and proms of senior year. That cohesion also lets UCS faculty track academic progress over years, not semesters. It gives families a place to belong.
What Parents Ask and What UCS Delivers
Is the school safe?
Yes. Doors are locked, and all visitors are screened. Every adult knows what to do in a drill. That’s the system. But safety also lives in relationships. When students know the staff, when older kids recognize the younger ones, you get eyes everywhere and fewer blind spots. That’s emotional safety at work, too. We protect all of our students as if they were our own.
What if my child struggles?
UCS teachers assess often and quickly offer valuable feedback. If a first-grader falls behind in reading, the new plan doesn’t wait until parent-teacher conferences. We ensure interventions start early by calling parents with notes or having face-to-face conversations that spell out what’s working and what’s next.
What does “charter school” mean?
It means we, as a school, choose our staff, shape our curriculum, and stay accountable to families, not a central office. We adhere to state standards and host public board meetings. You’re welcome to join us!
